HIghlights in the last year: Director Garth Davis created an amazing new spot for Schweppes. Shot in Victoria using super-slow motion cameras, the ‘Burst’ commercial features the stunning imagery of local surrounds, including the Manchester Unity Building and the Otway National Park. ‘Burst’ was named one of the best ads in the world at the Cannes International Advertising Festival 2008 in France, winning a prestigious gold Lion. Shot on a packed beach, Boots 'Moment of Truth' also picked up a bronze Lion. Davis also garnered much attention over the past year with his moving piece for Herringbone. More a short film than a TVC, ‘Henri’ is the tale of a man who discovers his calling to be a tailor, and in turn discovers himself.
Mark Molloy won a gold for best direction for TAC ‘Pictures of You’, and a silver for Nokia ‘Fairytale’ at the 2008 MADC awards. The TAC ad shows members of ten families sadly holding photographs of their loved ones, accompanied by the Cure song ‘Pictures of You’, performed by Angie Hart. These people are not actors, but real people who have opened very real wounds to show what it’s like to live with loss every day. It went to air as an unprecedented media block out in Victoria in Febuary 2008.
Glendyn Ivin, one of the originals at Exit Films continues to build his reputation locally and internationally. This year saw Ivin head into production with his debut Feature film, ‘The Last Ride’ staring Hugo Weaving. Further feature films are in the pipeline.
Micca Delaney’s new commercial coolmelbourne.org 'Jolt' was screened as part of 'Shots Evolution Australia' in Sydney in August this year. The event that was a showcase for new exciting directing talent in this country.
Amy Gebhardt has been named KODAK AWARD New Director Of The Year. Chosen from a list of finalists whose work represented an exceptional standard and an amazing variety of ideas, Gebhardt’s submission included three short film trailers 'Walnut', 'Look Sharp' and 'Pleasance'". Amy also picked up the award for Best Short Documentary at this years MIFF for her film “Heart”. A tender, intimate portrait of two women who inspire each other.
